May 7, 2005 · My most recent work has been informed by both how I now work as well as what is going on in the world – the global pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement in particular – and focuses on my notions of freedom and its constraints. I was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan and currently live and work in San Francisco.

John Bankston is a painter who explores themes of masculinity and male relationships with colorful and playful characters. He has exhibited his work in various museums and galleries, including the Orange County Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

John Bankston, the 2021-2022 Holt Visiting Artist at Stanford, has a practice that fits neatly into this experimental and physically transparent teaching space at the Coulter Gallery. He sees everyone as a storyteller, and his own work as an “ongoing visual narrative…the class to be a laboratory of image and story."
