May 12, 2011 · Tenor saxophonist JD Allen launched his piano-less trio a full fifty years after Sonny Rollins took this format to task on A Night At The Village Vanguard (Blue Note, 1957), and Victory!—his third trio outing for the Sunnyside label—is indicative of the fact that Allen keeps getting better with age.

May 17, 2011 · Victory! is the third release by the J. D. Allen Trio, following 2008’s I Am I Am, and 2009’s Shine! This excellent group is clearly inspired by Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane classics, but somehow the music comes off as vital rather than retro.
