Josemaría Escrivá is in Madrid when the civil war breaks out in 1936. Because of the religious persecution, he is forced to seek shelter in various places. He carries out his priestly ministry in a clandestine manner until he manages to leave Madrid.

He had one older sister, Carmen (1899-1957); three younger sisters who died very young; and a younger brother, Santiago (1919-1994). His parents, José and Dolores, brought up their children with a devout Catholic faith.
On 27 November 1924 his father, José Escrivá, died suddenly and unexpectedly. On 28 March 1925, Josemaría was ordained a priest by Bishop Díaz Gómara in the church of the Seminary of St Charles in Saragossa.
