Jan 1, 2018 · The Gretsch Company was founded in 1883 when a German immigrant named Friedrich Gretsch opened a small musical instrument shop in Brooklyn, New York. When Friedrich died suddenly in 1895, his fifteen-year-old son, Fred Gretsch Sr., took over the company.
1883 to 1929 – Friedrich Gretsch. In 1883 Friedrich set up a shop in Brooklyn to build banjos, drums and tambourines. His timing was good, the markets were favorable and his company grew. During a return trip to his native Germany in April of 1895, Friedrich died suddenly at age 39.
