In the 1920s Carl Orff, in an attempt to rejuvenate or revalidate Monteverdi, took the composer’s Orfeo, had it translated into German, eliminated some “extraneous” scenes, and re-orchestrated it. He continued to fiddle with it, and what is recorded here is the version he completed in 1940.

Orff: Orpheus. David Hurwitz. Artistic Quality: 10. Sound Quality: 8. Announcing the return of what we used to call “Orff Orph!” this is in reality Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, rescored, cut, and reorganized by Carl Orff for performance by modern forces.
Orff's shortened German version (with Günther's translation), Orpheus, was staged under his direction in 1925 in Mannheim, using some of the instruments that had been used in the original 1607 performance, although several of these were unavailable and had to be replaced.
Although the catalogue is not exactly stuffed with alternative versions this new disc does run into very stiff competition from the ‘authorised Orff edition’ recording currently available of the Arts Edition label.
