Opening May 2, 1977, the first Broadway revival of The King and I featured Yul Brynner reviving his Tony and Academy Award-winning portrayal of the King. Director Yuriko, a member of the original Broadway company, replicated Jerome Robbins’ original choreography.
In later revivals, Brynner came to dominate his role and the musical, starring in a four-year national tour culminating in a 1985 Broadway run shortly before his death. Christopher Renshaw directed major revivals on Broadway (1996), winning the Tony Award for Best Revival, and in the West End (2000).
He sends the Prince off and expands dramatically on his dilemma – A Puzzlement. Yul Brynner’s performance of this soliloquy is a singularly exciting experience and one of the true highlights in the history of the musical stage.
