The serial was released on February 5, and Purcell, age 38, died two months later, on 10 April 1944, the result of a fatal heart attack.
Dick Purcell was a good-natured, athletic leading man in the Regis Toomey/Lyle Talbot mold, so it seemed natural that he'd end up at Toomey's and Talbot's mutual stamping grounds of Warner Bros. For four years, Purcell was the uncrowned king of Warners' B-picture unit.

Dick Purcell. The late Dick Purcell portrayed Grant Gardner/Captain America in the 1944's Captain America. Tragically, Purcell's most famous role was also his last. The filming took a toll on his heart. A few weeks after filming the Captain America serial wrapped, he died on April 10, 1944 after playing a round of golf at a country club.
