Vasili Vasilyevich Merkuryev ( Russian: Васи́лий Васи́льевич Мерку́рьев; 6 April 1904 – 12 May 1978 [1]) was a Soviet and Russian stage and film actor, theater director and pedagogue. [2] People's Artist of the USSR (1960).
Vasili Merkuryev was known for his compassion and legendary generosity. He shared his money and food with his students during the times when they were struggling to survive. He adopted three children of his brother, Pyotr Merkuryev, who was executed in 1939, under dictatorship of Joseph Stalin.
