Colonel George Francis Gillman Stanley CC CD FRSC FRHSC FRHistS (July 6, 1907 – September 13, 2002) was a Canadian author, soldier, historian at Mount Allison University, public servant, and designer of the Canadian Flag.
George Maitland Stanley (April 26, 1903 – May 11, 1970) [1] was an American sculptor. Well known as sculpting the Muse Statue at the Hollywood Bowl. [2] [3] Austin Cedric Gibbons designed the Oscar statuette in 1928, but tasked the sculpting to George Stanley.

Sculptor George Stanley was commissioned to create the original statuette based on Gibbons’s design. For many years the statuettes were cast in bronze, with 24-karat gold plating. During World War II the statuettes were made of plaster because of metal shortages.
George Stanley was an eminent historian and one-time lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick. During the great flag debate of 1964, he was dean of arts at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario. Stanley was also a friend of Matheson.
