Chishū Ryū (笠 智衆, Ryū Chishū, May 13, 1904 – March 16, 1993) was a Japanese actor who, in a career lasting 65 years, appeared in over 160 films and about 70 television productions.

May 27, 2023 · from There Was a Father (1942) – this is Ozu’s best narrative to date in 1942. Ryû ’s enduringly stoic father is also the best performance in an Ozu film at this point in time. This is one of the three (3) times that Ryû gives one of the best performances of the year (1942, 1949, 1953).
It stars Ozu regular Chishū Ryū as the patriarch of the Hirayama family who eventually realises that he has a duty to arrange a marriage for his daughter Michiko (Shima Iwashita). It was Ozu's last film; he died the following year on the day he turned 60.
Ryū Chishū, an Ozu regular who bore an uncanny resemblance to the director, also appears in all three films, which like much of Ozu’s work focus on the inevitable gulf that grows between individual family members as time progresses.
