1978年7月12日出生于江西省南昌市。
1993年，15岁在读高二的刘涛就被选入南京军区集团军文工团。自1993到1995年在文工团担任文艺兵。在部队的三年时间里，她小品、相声、唱歌、跳舞样样精通。在部队的这三年她得到了全面的锻炼，使她变得更勇敢、更有毅力、更有责任心。
2000年，刘涛出演了个人首部电视剧作品《外来媳妇本地郎》，由此正式出道。
2003年7月7日，刘涛参演的《还珠格格3之天上人间》播出，在剧中饰演缅甸公主慕沙。
