By choosing to use three violas and cello, Niehaus gives the strings a richness that complements his alto, and he achieves particularly striking colors when two more saxophones are added to the ensemble. Four tracks with a more familiar quintet instrumentation leaven the string numbers.
Jan 31, 2007 · This is the fourth Contemporary LP (now CD) Niehaus recorded (spring 1955), and is different from the others with the addition of a string section (3 violos, 1 cello) to the regular playing unit. It's a shame, too, because without those strings this easily would have been a 5-star CD.
