Derartu Tulu NL COL ( Oromo: Daraartuu Tulluu, Amharic: ደራርቱ ቱሉ; born 21 March 1972) is an Ethiopian former long-distance runner, who competed in track, cross country running, and road running up to the marathon distance. Derartu is the first Ethiopian woman and the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal.

Mar 29, 2024 · Derartu Tulu: How Ethiopia’s Olympic champion united a continent and inspired a generation with her running. The Ethiopian legend went from herding family cows in the small remote village of Bekoji to becoming the first woman from sub-Saharan Africa to win an Olympic medal at Barcelona 1992.
Tulu became the first woman to win two gold medals in Olympic distance races. At the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, she won the bronze medal in the 10,000m (gold medallist was China's Huina Xing, silver medallist, Derartu's compatriot Ejegayehu Dibaba).
Derartu Tulu is the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold in the 10,000 m in 1992. She also won two more golds in the same event in 1996 and 2000, and a bronze in 2004.
