The book begins as you, the only survivor of a merchant ship, are thrown overboard by a bunch of pirates. You float to the bottom of the ocean, but realize that a magical pentagram inscribed on the ocean floor has given you gills!

You were a sailor on the Sunfish, a ship departing from Port Blacksand to the south, before it ran afoul of the Troll and its wicked captain, the ruthless Bloodaxe.
