The film is a Dacoit Western (sometimes called a "Curry Western"), combining the conventions of Indian dacoit films with that of Spaghetti Westerns along with elements of Samurai cinema. Sholay is also a defining example of the masala film, which mixes several genres in one work.

Director’s note. Curry Western is a funny tale about the fight for property, probably the most basic human conflict in all cultures since the beginning of time. It shows that when both sides believe that their end justifies any means, then everyone can be caught fighting to their death.
His film credits include a co-starring role aside Diane Lane and Donald Sutherland in Fierce People directed by Griffin Dunne, and supporting roles with Andy Garcia in Lazarus Child, and alongside Angelina Jolie in Life or Something Like It.
