Jim, a young British merchant seaman who has just completed his apprenticeship to become a first officer, is recuperating from a broken leg at a port in the Orient. He signs aboard the dilapidated Patna , but in a storm he abandons ship, leaving the passengers to drown.
After being discredited as a coward, a 19th century seaman lives for only one purpose: to redeem himself. James Burke, after distinguishing himself as a midshipman in the British merchant marine, rapidly rises to the rank of executive officer, second in command of a ship.
