The Mystery of Mr. X is a 1934 American pre-Code crime film starring Robert Montgomery as a jewel thief who gets mixed up in a series of murders in London. It is based on the 1933 novel X v. Rex by Philip MacDonald (under the pen name Martin Porlock), was remade in 1952 as The Hour of 13.

Someone has been killing London bobbies. One night, the killer strikes again, right near where a thief steals a huge diamond. The clueless Scotland Yard tries to connect the two and creates a red herring. The conniving thief hatches a plan to be able to get the reward for the diamond's return.
