The story of a 5 year old Afghan girl who wants to go to school against all odds. Bakhtay, a little girl living in the caves under the remains of the Buddha statues of Bamyan (which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001), becomes obsessed with the idea of going to school.
Central Afghanistan, Bamyan Province. Under the giant ancient Buddha statues destroyed by the Taliban, thousands of families try to survive in the caves. Intrigued by her neighbour, who recites the alphabet all day long, Baktay, a six-year-old Afghan girl, summons up the courage to study at a school for girls on the other side of the river.
