The genus name comes from the Greek σάρξ ( sarx) meaning flesh and σοῦχος ( souchus) meaning crocodile. It was one of the largest pseudosuchians, with the largest specimen of S. imperator reaching approximately 9–9.5 metres (29.5–31.2 ft) long and weighing up to 3.45–4.3 metric tons (3.80–4.74 short tons).

- Sarcosuchus Is Also Known as the SuperCroc. The name Sarcosuchus is Greek for "flesh crocodile," but that apparently wasn't impressive enough for the producers at National Geographic.
- Sarcosuchus Kept Growing Throughout Its Life Span. Unlike modern crocodiles, which attain their full adult size in about 10 years, Sarcosuchus seems to have kept growing and growing at a steady rate throughout its lifetime (paleontologists can determine this by examining bone cross-sections from various fossilized specimens).

Nicknamed “SuperCroc,” fossils of Sarcosuchus were first discovered by French paleontologist Albert-Felix de Lapparent and named in 1966 by France de Broin and fellow paleontologist Philippe Taquet.
If the SuperCroc had lived after the dinosaurs had gone extinct, rather than right alongside them during the middle Cretaceous period (about 100 million years ago), it would have counted as one of the largest land-dwelling animals on the face of the earth!
