“The Woman Next Door” opens as a simple story about two houses. They are next door to one another. The story gets a great deal less simple after we meet the inhabitants of the houses. The house on the right is lived in by Gerard Depardieu, a big, friendly lunk of a guy who loves his wife and kids.
Bernard, a teacher, lives with his wife and son in quiet, rural France. One day, a married couple moves into the house next door. The woman, Mathilde, happens to be Bernard’s ex-lover, with whom he had an intense affair. Meeting each other once again, they are sucked into that same passion….
Two ex-lovers wind up living next door to each other with their respective spouses. Forbidden passions ensue. Madame Jouve, the narrator, tells the tragedy of Bernard and Mathilde.
