Jun 5, 2013 · Overview. On July 19–21, 2001, over 200,000 people took to the streets of Genoa to protest against the ongoing G8 summit. Anti-globalization activists clashed with the police, with 23-year-old protester Carlo Giuliani shot dead after confronting a police vehicle.
On the last day of the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001, hundreds of police stormed the Diaz school, a temporary shelter for the many international protesters. For two hours, the police moved down its hallways, indiscriminately attacking everyone, sending dozens off to the hospital or a detention center.
