- He was a lifelong opportunist and alcoholic. Oskar Schindler was born on April 28, 1908 in the Austro-Hungarian province of Moravia. His father was a Sudeten German who operated a farm machinery company; of his mother little is known.
- Schindler was an supporter of Nazism years before the Czechoslovakia crisis. In the 1930s a growing sect of the Nazi Party developed among the Sudeten Germans in Czechoslovakia, which had itself been created when it declared independence from Austria-Hungary near the end of the First World War.
- Schindler became a full member of the Nazi Party in 1939. Schindler was arrested for espionage in July of 1938. While he was imprisoned the crisis over the Sudetenland reached its climactic point.
- Schindler acquired a factory formerly owned by Jewish businessmen. In October 1939 Oskar Schindler was dispatched to the Polish city of Krakow, which had been overrun by the German army the preceding month, on orders from the Abwehr.
During WWII, Oskar Schindler at first profited off of the cheap labor of those in the Krakow ghetto but after seeing the brutality of the Nazis, chose to spend his fortune on saving the lives of over a thousand of his Jewish workers.
