Infuriated by his wife's continuing love for Marcus, Gruber offers Marcus a bribe to leave the village. Marcus spurns the proposition and is forced to shoot Gruber in self-defense. Accused of murder, Marcus flees into the mountains with Ciglia.
Ciglia (Camilla Horn) is a young woman living in a tiny village in the Swiss Alps. Her village has been occupied by the French, and all of the villagers have surrendered their guns. Only Marcus (John Barrymore) refuses to turn in his gun, keeping rebellion burning in his heart.
