In 1821, Woyzeck, in a fit of jealousy, murdered Christiane Woost, a 46-year-old widow with whom he had been living; he was later publicly beheaded. [1] Büchner's work remained in a fragmentary state at the time of his early death in 1837.

Woyzeck [ˈvɔʏtsɛk] is a 1979 German drama film written, produced and directed by Werner Herzog and starring Klaus Kinski and Eva Mattes. It is an adaptation of the unfinished play Woyzeck by German dramatist Georg Büchner .
Woyzeck ist ein Dramenfragment des deutschen Dramatikers und Dichters Georg Büchner, der mit der Niederschrift vermutlich zwischen etwa Ende Juli und Anfang Oktober 1836 begann. Bei seinem frühen Tod im Februar 1837 blieb das Werk als Fragment zurück.

Woyzeck was eventually tried, found guilty, and beheaded for his crime. Like the protagonist of Büchner’s play, the real Woyzeck’s life was defined by hardship and struggle. Orphaned at a young age, he drifted throughout Europe, working menial jobs until enlisting as a soldier in various armies.
