MAME is a multi-purpose emulation framework. MAME’s purpose is to preserve decades of software history. MAME is an acronym for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. The intent of this emulator is preservation; the ability to play games is considered a "side-effect." MAME supports thousands of classic arcade games, although not all of them are playable.

Using MAME¶ If you want to dive right in and skip the command line, there's a nice graphical way to use MAME without the need to download and set up a front end. Simply start MAME with no parameters, by double-clicking the mame.exe file or running it directly from the command line.
