  5. In 1928, young heiress Martha Ivers (Barbara Stanwyck) fails to run off with friend Sam Masterson (Van Heflin), and is involved in fatal events. Years later, Sam returns to find Martha the power behind Iverstown and married to "good boy" Walter O'Neil (Kirk Douglas), now a District Attorney.

  6. Synopsis. In 1928, young Martha Ivers is returned by the police to Iverstown, Pennsylvania after running away for the fourth time to escape the tyranny of her aunt. When her aunt insults her dead father, then attacks her pet cat with a cane, the child kills her aunt with the cane.
