According to the Bible, Amos was the older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah and was active c. 760–755 BCE during the rule of kings Jeroboam II of Israel and Uzziah of Kingdom of Judah and is portrayed as being from the southern Kingdom of Judah yet preaching in the northern Kingdom of Israel (Samaria).

Though he came from the southern kingdom of Judah, Amos delivered his prophecy against the northern kingdom of Israel and the surrounding nations, leading to some resistance from the prideful Israelites (Amos 7:12).
Amos was a vigorous spokesman for God's justice and righteousness, whereas Hosea emphasized God's love, grace, mercy and forgiveness. Amos declared that God was going to judge his unfaithful, disobedient, covenant-breaking people.

Amos (flourished 8th century bc) was the first Hebrew prophet to have a biblical book named for him. He accurately foretold the destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel (although he did not specify Assyria as the cause) and, as a prophet of doom, anticipated later Old Testament prophets.

Amos declared boldly and fearlessly that G‑d had sent him to Bethel to speak in His Name and warn the people of their impending doom. The prophet reminded the people of the many kindnesses which G‑d had shown them since the beginning of their history as a people.
