“Taking Off” is set in the United States in the late 1960s. Young Jeannie runs away from home to New York City with the hopes of becoming a singer. In New York City she meets a community of hippies and bohemians.
In this dark, affectionate, and rarely seen satire (Miloš Forman’s first feature made in the US), a husband and wife embark on a wild goose chase after their runaway daughter and wind up experimenting with the wild habits of youth counterculture.
Unable to deal with her parents, Jeannie Tyne runs away from home. Larry and Lyne Tyne search for her, and in the process meet other people whose children ran away. With their children gone, the parents are now free to rediscover/enjoy life.
