When Rayburn and his wife Celia (Elizabeth McGovern) encounter a young man named Ben Tyler (Charles Mattocks)--a mentally-challenged African-American youth with nowhere to go--they take pity on him and let him stay in their home.
Dec 15, 1996 · Overview. Set early during World War II, the film has a lot to say about love, honor, relationships, commitment and power. Keeping their promise to their dying black housekeeper, a white family takes in her teenage mentally-slow son.
Set in the Deep South in 1942, a white man and his wife open their home to the young, mildly retarded son of their black housekeeper after her sudden death, but this simple act of compassion causes problems for the couple when some members of the community express their prejudice and hatred.
