In the 2nd century BC, Syracuse, on the island of Sicily, was a neutral city-state geographically situated between the warring powers of Rome and Carthage. When Rome got the upper hand over Carthage, however, it set its sights on Syracuse, resulting in the siege of 213-212 BC.

The Romans attack Syracuse, and Archimedes turns back their fleet by using "burning glasses," which magnify the sun's rays and destroy whatever they are turned upon. In the final fighting, both Marcello and Gorgia are killed.
Overview. Syracuse lies between the warring nations of Rome and Carthage; as long as the balance of power between the nations remains intact, both nations are willing to preserve the neutrality of Syracuse. However, Rome has now gotten the upper hand in its struggle for power.
