Sep 27, 2008 · “Tokyo Sonata” is multi-layered film that follows the path of a musical sonata in its narrative structure. Kurosawa uses naturalism in the first half of the film to lay out its story and then builds up to a dizzying crescendo with a more unpredictable style that’s familiar with Kurosawa’s past works.
Takashi ( Yu Koyanagi) announces he has enlisted in the U.S. Army as a way to gain citizenship, as he sees no future for himself in Japan. His father forbids him. Unable to lose face by admitting his job loss, Ryuhei leaves "for the office" every day and lingers in a cheerless concrete oasis with other jobless men. There is a soup kitchen.
The wind of change is blowing as a family grapples with unemployment, alienation, mistrust and a lack of communication.
