Roger la Honte is an 1886 novel by the French writer Jules Mary. Its melodramatic plot takes place around the time of the Franco-Prussian War. It is his best known work. In 1887-1889 he published a sequel The Revenge of Roger la Honte which was released in two parts.

Roger la Honte is a film that proves the contrary. Admirably supported by his accomplished cinematographer Armand Thirard, Cayatte crafts an opulent period piece that appeals to the eye, the heart and the intellect.
In the period following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Roger Laroque became the owner of a small factory. But business was bad and Laroque found himself forced to borrow a huge sum of money. He finally managed to acquit his debt but the day after, Larouette, his creditor, was found murdered.
