The film is based on Alan Duff's novel What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? (1999), the sequel to Once Were Warriors (1990), which was made into the film Once Were Warriors (1994).
When their older son, Nig (Julian Arahanga), is killed in a gang fight, his brother, Sonny (Clint Eruera), becomes determined to avenge his death. Attempting to change his life for the better, Jake tries to help Sonny avoid Nig's tragic fate.
