- Bad Boys. Bad Boys is the definitive bud dy cop movie series, as far as I’m concerned. Other films came first, and Lethal Weapon undeniably did a lot to push the genre forward, but Bad Boys is the ultimate realization of two wacky assholes blowing shit up under the paper-thin defense of a police badge.
- Hot Fuzz. Hot Fuzz is easily Edgar Wright’s best movie. Part action movie and part action movie send-up, it does the difficult task of juggling wry observations of buddy action tropes while delivering some of the best versions of buddy action tropes ever captured on film.
- Lethal Weapon. It’s hard to overstate the impact Lethal Weapon had on the buddy cop genre, and on action films in general. The formula already existed (most notably in films like 48 Hrs.)
- Tango & Cash. Tango & Cash was the very last movie released in the 1980s, and it absolutely shows. Imagine if the first Lethal Weapon had been written on ten times the amount of cocaine and 8,000% of the hubris, and this motion picture is the result.
- Lethal Weapon (1987) This is the original. When you look at buddy cop films, Lethal Weapon has to come to mind. Whether or not you like Mel Gibson, this franchise was a massive success that spurred three sequels.
- Rush Hour (1998) Rush Hour likely wasn’t greenlit with by anyone thinking it would become as big of a blockbuster as it did, but it certainly proved to be a nice surprise.
- 48 Hrs. (1982) Some may argue 48 Hrs. is the original buddy cop film, but given Eddie Murphy’s character isn’t actually a cop it is hard to win that argument.
- Bad Boys (1995) It may have been well over a decade since Will Smith and Martin Lawrence last teamed up for a Bad Boys film, but that doesn’t matter to the fans.
