rōnin, any of the masterless samurai warrior aristocrats of the late Muromachi (1138–1573) and Tokugawa (1603–1867) periods who were often vagrant and disruptive and sometimes actively rebellious.
The ronin held a unique place in feudal Japanese society, as they embodied the essence of both honor and defiance. These masterless samurai often saw them as rogues and outcasts. Yet, their tales of bravery, tragedy, and redemption inspired generations of young men.
