May 5, 1973 · This memoir can be easily adapted to make a costume-period movie, but Syberberg didn't choose that way. He chose to have a narrator walking through many beautiful palaces in the present time, quoting the memoir and giving his own comments from time to time. All is said in monologue.

Handlung. Sedlmayr führt die Zuschauer in seiner Rolle als ehemaliger Hofkoch Theodor Hierneis wie ein Fremdenführer durch die Schlösser Linderhof, Neuschwanstein und das Berghaus Schachen von König Ludwig II. von Bayern und erzählt dabei vom Beginn seiner Karriere als Küchenjunge am Hof.
Theodor Hierneis (* 4. Oktober 1868 in München; † 19. April 1953 ebenda) war ein deutscher Mundkoch am Hofe von König Ludwig II. von Bayern. Bekannt wurde er durch seine Memoiren über die Zeit bei Hofe, welche im Jahre 1972 mit Walter Sedlmayr in der Hauptrolle in Theodor Hierneis oder Wie man ehem. Hofkoch wird verfilmt wurden.
