Quirky stranger Donovan (Colin Firth) blows into the Scottish village of Port Clyde. There, he rents a room with the Pannick family and ingratiates himself into their lives. Lucy (Katy Murphy) is the long-suffering matriarch of the clan, caring for her senile grandmother (Liz Smith) and mentally disabled brother, Sandy (David Brown).
Enter Donovan Quick, the mysterious wordsmith who takes up residence with the Pannick family and changes their lives and the community in the process. When the Windmill Transport Bus Company discontinues a local train route, leaving Sandy with no way to get to his day care center, Donovan decides they should start their own one-bus company.
Donovan Quick is a modern day reworking of Cervantes Don Quixote. It also happens to be a critique of the Tory governments privatisation policies of public transport. In short council led bus services being replaced by private monopolies who stifle competition.
Donovan Quick, a polite stranger newly arrived in town, comes to the rescue and takes on the windmills by setting up his owner operated one vehicle bus service. Against all odds and expectations, he proves to be an adversary to be reckoned with.
