The Silent Service (Japanese: 沈黙の艦隊, Hepburn: Chinmoku no Kantai) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kaiji Kawaguchi. It was published in Kodansha's Weekly Morning manga magazine from 1988 to 1996 and collected in 32 tankōbon volumes.

The Japanese submarine sinks after the collision. The media cover the story of the submarine and its 76 crew members, including Captain Shiro Kaieda ( Takao Osawa ), who are reported to have died in the accident. The public in Japan are shocked by the news, but, in fact, all 76 crew members of the submarine are alive.

A TV series from 1957-1958 that dramatized true stories of the US Navy's submarine fleet in the South Pacific and Korea. The series was created by Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers, who retired from the Navy in 1949 and used actual combat footage.
Season 1. An MSDF submarine collides with a U.S. nuclear submarine, crushing all 76 people on board, including its CO, Shiro Kaieda. However, the crew survives. The accident is a cover story to get the MSDF submarine’s crew on board the Seabat, a nuclear submarine secretly built by the Japanese and U.S. governments.
