  1. Plot. In the mind of a young girl named Riley Andersen are a series of personified basic emotions that influence her actions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. Riley's experiences become memories that are stored as colored orbs and are sent into long-term memory each night.

    • Joy. Amy Poehler stars as the personification of Joy in Inside Out. She’s the first emotion to manifest itself in Riley’s head and does her best to help her human girl make happy memories.
    • Sadness. Phyllis Smith brings a voice to melancholy and despair as the personification of Sadness. None of the emotions, not even Sadness herself, understand why she exists.
    • Fear. Fear, voiced by Bill Hader, is on a constant lookout for every possible danger that could befall Riley whether it’s the first day of school or nightmarish clowns.
    • Anger. Lewis Black fittingly voices Anger in Inside Out and does his best to protect Riley from injustices like no dessert.

    • All of our emotions exist for a purpose. Emotions are neither inherently good or bad, and to think of them in such dichotomous terms is to do yourself a disservice.
    • To have emotions is to have a compass. At one point in the film, Joy tries to keep Sadness away from Riley. Although she felt other emotions, the inability to feel sadness, coupled with her mother’s request for Riley to stay happy, ultimately lead to a cold and numb existence.
    • Our realities and memories are filtered through our emotional lens. Just like our present reality is seen through the framework of our past experience, the memories we look back on are colored by our present-moment experience.
    • Having the language to talk about emotions is empowering. Probably the most remarkable part of the movie is its existence as a film that focuses on emotions.
