Early life. Musiq was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in a strict Muslim household.During his teenage years he built a reputation for being musically gifted, beat boxing for MCs freestyling on the open mic circuit, scatting at jazz clubs, or just performing an a cappella for strangers on the streets, which is where he got the name "Musiq" and later added "Soulchild."

Feb 29, 2024 · About Musiq Soulchild Pronounced “music,” the first part of Taalib Johnson’s distinctive moniker grew out of Music Boy, a nickname Johnson gained as a teen who was keen to show off his gifts whether he was performing at open mic nights or beatboxing for local MCs in Philadelphia, where he was born in 1977.
Musiq Soulchild is one of the most influential singers of his generation. Weaned on Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway just to name a few along with hip hop elements & story telling Musiq pioneered the “neo-soul” movement of the early millennium. Musiq has received 13 Grammy nominations and has sold millions of records throughout the world.
