Iro Haarla (born 7 November 1956) is a Finnish jazz pianist and harpist, as well as composer and band leader. [1] Career. At the Sibelius Academy, in Helsinki, Haarla studied classical piano under Izumi Tateno, musical composition under Einar Englund, and improvisation under Heikki Sarmanto.

May 11, 2021 · Pianist-composer Iro Haarla became one of Finnish jazz’s first prominent female instrumentalists more than four decades ago, but she doesn’t spend much time looking back. Her latest album takes a new tack, combining electronics and rock guitar with an environmental theme.
Iro Haarla was born in 1956 and studied piano and composition at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy and jazz and improvising with Heikki Sarmanto. Early jazz role models included Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and especially Paul Bley whose “silence and dissonance” proved influential.
Iro Haarla, 61, is a seasoned Jazz musician who became known in the late 1970s for working side by side with her fiancé, percussionist Edward Vesala. Later in her career she released several praised solo pieces and collaborated with the best Norwegian musicians.
