A-Mei was born on 9 August 1972 [10] [11] in the Tamalakaw tribe (belonging to the Puyuma) in Beinan, Taitung, Taiwan. [10] [12] Her Puyuma-language name is Kulilay Amit, [13] [14] [15] alternatively transliterated Gulilai Amit. [11] She was the seventh child in a family of nine children.
