He became vice-president of the Union Pacific Railroad Company in 1915 and served as chairman of the board from 1932 to 1946.
In 1936, Averell Harriman, then chairman of the board of the Union Pacific Railroad, built the first streamlined U.S. passenger trains. Looking to attract passenger traffic to his railroad business, he hit upon the idea of building a ski resort.
