Johan Rudolph Thorbecke (14 January 1798 – 4 June 1872) was a Dutch liberal statesman, one of the most important Dutch politicians of the 19th century. Thorbecke is best known for heading the commission that drafted the revision of the Constitution of the Netherlands in 1848, amidst the liberal democratic revolutions of 1848.

The liberal politician Johan Rudolf Thorbecke (1798-1872), is celebrated as the founder of the present-day constitution of the Netherlands. Prior to entering the political arena Thorbecke pursued an academic career. He became a professor of philosophy and literature at Ghent University in 1825.

Johan Rudolph Thorbecke was born in 1798 in Zwolle to a poor family of German origin. He studied humanities in Leiden, after which he became a private lecturer in Germany.
Johan Rudolph was born in 1798 in Zwolle, capital of Overijssel. His father, who processed and traded in tobacco, had married a German cousin from Osnabrock. In 1803 he was obliged to retire from business and from then on his circumstances were extremely straightened.
