Jamak bermaksud menghimpunkan. Dari segi bahasa, jamak adalah perkataan Arab yang bermaksud menghimpunkan atau mengumpulkan sesuatu yang berselerak. Dalam hal solat, ia bermaksud menghimpunkan dua waktu solat fardudengan melakukannya dalam satu waktu.
Qasar bermaksud memendekkan solat.Contohnya daripada empat rakaat dipendekkan menjadi dua rakaat. Solat yang boleh dipendekkan menjadi dua rakaat ialah Solat Isyak, Zohor dan Asar. Solat Qasar juga boleh digabungkan dengan Jamak, iaitu dengan memendekkan jumlah rakaat serta menghimpun solat-solat tersebut.
Solat tamam merujuk kepada melaksanakan solat dengan lengkap tanpa mengambil rukhsah (kemudahan) qasar. Ini bermakna melaksanakan solat dengan bilangan rakaat yang penuh seperti yang telah ditetapkan, contohnya empat rakaat untuk solat Zohor, Asar, dan Isyak apabila seseorang itu tidak dalam keadaan musafir.
