Carter Braxton was born on September 10, 1736 at Newington Plantation in Livingston, Virginia. He was the son of George Braxton, Jr. and of Mary Carter, who died just seven days after giving birth. Carter’s father died when he was in his teens, and he was raised by family friends.

BRAXTON, CARTER. (1736–1797). Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Virginia. Son of a wealthy planter, Carter Braxton was born on 10 September 1736, on the family's plantation. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1756 and, after the death of his first wife in December 1757, he spent the next three years in England.
Carter Braxton, grandson of the wealthiest man in Virginia, was a well-connected planter and public servant. He served in the House of Burgesses from 1761 to 1775 and was known to be moderate in his politics.
