The biblical author saw the God of Israel at work in David’s story in unique and important ways that made him stand out from among all of Israel’s kings. The stories of David weren’t preserved and crafted merely out of historical interest. This story of David’s humble origins came to epitomize the ideal king.

In Saul's service. When Saul, the first King of Israel, disobeyed the Lord’s command to destroy Amalek, God sent an evil spirit in him to torment him. He called David, the shepherd, to his palace because David was good at playing the harp, and the soft music soothed Saul when he was being tormented by the evil spirit.
Having famously killed the Philistine giant Goliath, David was an aide at the court of Saul until the monarch’s jealousy forced David into outlawry. After Saul’s death, David became king of Judah, in the south, while Saul’s eldest surviving son, Ishbosheth, was made king of northern Israel.
