Aristophanes, the son of son of Philippus from the city deme of Cydathenaeum, was born in the 440s. Though unsubstantiated, his traditional birth date of 444/3 BC is probably not far from the truth; 447/6 BC seems a bit more likely. Either way, he started competing at the major Athenian festivals in his early 20s.
