Jonathan Littell (born October 10, 1967) is a writer living in Barcelona. His first novel written in French, The Kindly Ones (2006; Les Bienveillantes), won two major French awards, including the Prix Goncourt and the Prix de l'Académie française. Littell grew up in France and the United States and is a citizen of both countries.
This book is his first novel written in French and his second novel after the science fiction themed Bad Voltage in 1989. Littell said he wanted to focus on the thinking of an executioner and of origins of state murder, [5] showing how we can take decisions that lead, or not, to a genocide. [6]
