Fairbanks North Star Borough comprises the Fairbanks, AK, Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is one of only two metropolitan areas in Alaska. The borough is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base.

The 2020 Census put the population of the city proper at 32,515 [7] and the population of the Fairbanks North Star Borough at 95,655, [7] making it the second most populous metropolitan area in Alaska after Anchorage.
